MapSearch enables free of charge place-name search in Lantmäteriets place-names database. This version also features information regarding county, municipality and type of feature referring to the given place-name. Lantmäteriet determines and approves place-names, the decisions regarding spelling and form as well as providing them on the public maps.
Saami in its different varieties, north-, lule-, ume- and south-Saami occur on public maps and databases. They can be seen in agreement with their own approved orthographies. In many cases, the older map orthography name form is saved together with the correct Saami name.
In MapSearch and place-names the Saami name form will be available in the pace they are inserted in our basic place-name register. During a transmission period, names within the mountain world may be absent. Furthermore in some cases, the Saami names can be without or have the wrong language code. However, this will be gradually tended to.
Place-names approved by Lantmäteriet have mostly been collected and documented through fieldwork, with the local inhabitants as their first source of information. According to that information the place-names are examined by place-names specialists and compared with documents in the place-name archives in Uppsala, Göteborg, Lund and Umeå.
